JAMES WHITE AND THE BLACKS Off-White 1979 Canada pressing Another great one from the “#nowave ” pile from yesterday, one of a handful of James Chance-related records. This takes the music made with The Contortions and reframes it through groovy dance music. It’s still weird (because everything Chance did had a bit of weirdness to it), just a little more disco. 😂 Punks and art-punks at the time had a universal disdain and hostility for dance music. Here, Chance gave them something they could get behind. Angular guitars, #avantgarde #jazz rhythms, all mixed over very danceable and hypnotic drums. It was a very divisive album when it came out, but it’s now recognized as an underground cult classic. It’s been great to hear all these Chance-related albums again these last few days.
