@chrispoole@mastodon.social @atpfm@mastodon.social @caseyliss@mastodon.social Same — so I kept a close eye on the VW Golf Neo which just launched the 2026 version. They actually listened to all the criticisms of the last one and … fixed them? Hey wow. What I’m dying to find is anything that doesn’t have the 2020s disease of “wide hips” — the windows are narrower than the wheelbase, for no reason. Not just hatchbacks but everything (barring Tesla, but their designs are 2010s). I just don’t understand the benefit of having harder parking and drive-thru experiences, when getting no more shoulder room inside, and no more luggage capacity. (The 2018 Golf series is still the benchmark). It feels like form over function.

@chrispoole@mastodon.social @atpfm@mastodon.social @caseyliss@mastodon.social Anyway I’ve done less than 50,000 miles on this one and am realising that the urge to upgrade is the most materialistic thing out of all the things. Lowest bang for buck. And the engine has even been feeling BETTER since the warranty ran out and I got to choose my own mechanic. But anything might happen tomorrow, like a collision and write-off. So like all good nerds, I always maintain a mental note of “my next X will be the Y”, whether it’s cars, computers, TVs or video players. In middle-age this has broadened to espresso machines, HVAC, induction stoves and everything kitchen & laundry (Miele is winning, often, though it’s the last chance to buy Made in Germany) Oh and toasters — all hail the Avanti Tefal Hi-Speed … RIP you GOAT, I think I found the last refurbished one in 2026. Do not fool yourself with the sequel knock-off model, which will never throw your toast onto the plate!
