@Space_Burger_Steve@mstdn.ca @alltherum@freeradical.zone on Mastodon, I'm increasingly not seeing rational discussions of problems, covering both risks and benefits. Linus Torvalds offered those, and many here have responded by calling him a slop artist, and demanded that a fork be made.

    @buckfiftyseven@mastodon.social @alltherum@freeradical.zone Okay, but I've never seen anyone say "I hate AI for no reason," and I've yet to see a benefit that offsets the massive financial, ecological, and social costs of data centers, and the use of AI for tasks to which it isn't suited. I see a lot of hate for cars and drivers too, and I usually agree with it. But I never see anyone saying "let's do away with ambulances and fire trucks," and I think it's because most people would take it as a given that those are worth keeping. But if I had to list ambulances, firetrucks, cement mixers, and every other exception whenever I complained about cars, I'd run out of characters, so the complaint gets shortened to just "cars." Likewise, "I hate AI" is the truncated version, rather than "I hate the type of AI that is built on stolen work, has received billions of dollars from multiple governments, requires unreasonable amounts of water and energy, reduces educational and creative outcomes, saves no work, because the code it produces has to be corr
