Bill Dixon recounted a similar strategy in the film Imagine The Sound. He, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman and others into #FreeJazz were playing gigs in abandoned warehouses and cafés. Bill created a poster that merely implied these were already acclaimed famous artists, and at the bottom, a single line of praise from a Downbeat article, a rarity indeed at the time, but also a stamp of street cred. The poster was sent to all the jazz 'zines and radio hosts.
They didn't rival the Beatles 🤣 but suddenly they were in demand and touring, and soon to be headliners.
