Things you don't learn about #Nashville in the 21st century without looking back at turn of the 20th century #history: between Fisk faculty and Vanderbilt students and settlement houses it was a focal point of the “Social Gospel” and racial reform. And the debates between W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington were a catalyst for these Nashville movements. Nashville's Bethlehem House, a downtown settlement house, was established under the leadership of Fisk alum Sallie Hill Sawyer, and sustained with the help of the founder of the Fisk Sociology Dept and social work program, George Haynes, who was also a Social Gospel proponent.
