🧵 I can’t cry as easily as I used to in former times. Watching our news footage of the fires in the south-west, the tears just streamed down my face. The persistence of the #firefighters and #rescue workers, often followed by trauma that will last a lifetime. How they are left in the lurch by a government that has cut back on everything for years and failed to act. Just like during the pandemic. We haven’t learnt anything from the fact that, at some point, the rescuers themselves need to be

@NatureMC@mastodon.online I'm so sorry Petra for all that's happening in France, all over Europe, and in so many other parts of the world. We are all victims of the austerity policies of our neoliberal politicians. I live in Ontario, Canada, 1,900 km from the wildfires blazing out of control in Northern Ontario, and we get the smoke all the way down here. Our Premier cut the North's firefighting budget, and several First Nations communities received no evacuation orders. They had to escape with no help or warning. There really are no safe places anymore. Scientists tried for decades to tell us, and our leaders ignored them. 10 years ago the Paris Climate agreement was signed by the international community with great fanfare. They told us to start using paper straws and then, nothing. It's not just our leaders who are recklessly thoughtless... a few days ago, July 23, 2026, was the busiest day for commercial air travel ever, with a whopping 153,359 commercial flights tracked worldwide. We seem determined to destroy ourselves.
