@theodoraward@mastodon.social a lot of people who love local LLMs and want to excuse their own use of them do so by claiming that the plagarism required to train the model was fine because copyright is evil
regardless of one’s stance on our current, very flawed copyright system, it’s notable that these guys came out in force in a circumstance where abolishing copyright protections would do the maximum amount of damage to artists, authors, programmers, and creators, and give power to the corporations that cannot be taken back once they claim it.
and of course, the corporations do not agree that copyright should disappear. they believe they hold copyright over their models and derivative works (and all local LLMs are derivatives of proprietary ones) and are legally poised to make the method of derivation illegal when convenient.
it doesn’t matter to them that the models were created by theft. lots of things in capitalism were created by theft and made legal by force of money.
