Reason No. 78 to embrace neurodiversity framework in psychology: nervous systems are weird and different ones will have completely different reactions to the same substance and dosage. I am a case in point. Things my nervous system has weird reactions to: 1) My nervous system is almost completely unresponsive to cannabinoids. THC, whether smoked or eaten, just doesn’t seem to connect with my nervous system. No giddiness, no anxiety, no nausea or increased appetite, no heightened sense of novelty, no mild stimulant effects. Nothing. No one I know is like this. 2) I am highly resistant to opiates, and most opiates are ineffective on me. Opiate derived numbing agents, like lidocaine, also take higher doses, are slower to act, and wear off quicker. I also tend to need a bit more anesthesia. We might actually know why this one happens: I have ginger/redhead genes and there is a correlation (though inconclusive science) with the gene that changes melaninocytes. 3) I straight up can’t stay addicted to nicotine. I have repeatedly been a regular smoker, having as much as half a pack a day. And then I’ll just forget to smoke for a while. I sometimes can identify withdrawal effects afterwards, but during I just won’t notice for weeks or months at a time really. Again, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t even choose to stop smoking but can’t stay addicted to it despite physical dependency! I suspect my ADHD is just that bad! 🤣🤣🤣
