probably an extremely hot take... but maybe this problem with Linux Mint (and other Linux distros that ship GNOME apps which are held back by how many versions) would not keep having bugs in them that are patched upstream if, yknow... the GNOME team didn't have a hard-on for constantly asking "use case for x?" and "what makes you think y is a metric?" about relatively sane features? maybe forcing distros to actively change the source code to simply theme the app is a bad idea. you're pretty much just turning GNOME apps into Suckless apps, except GNOME apps are how many times more complicated and heavier on their source code and Suckless apps encourage you to modify them. really not sure why GNOME is the most ass backwards desktop environment meanwhile XFCE and KDE feel the most user-friendly and willing to add features for user QoL... even hotter of a take, maybe GNOME is the sole thing holding Linux back from a larger OS market share because of these poor development decisions affecting the most user-friendly distros. just food for thought. #linux
