I think by cutting off contact/dialogue, you’re really hurting someone who could benefit from your better views. You shouldn’t ever remove your ability to provide charity by simple thought exchange.

I think there is a fraction of Trump supporters who would change their views in response to people cutting them out of their life and who have told them that is the reason. Sort of like how all politics is local. If enough were peeled off like that, they wouldn’t seek refuge in the consensus of the majority. Americans who have kept in touch with their Trump-supporting relatives generally don’t put NEARLY the amount of pressure on them that they should. So these ideas at Thanksgiving become legitimised to some extent. Especially if someone at the table says something like “we should avoid talking politics”, or “regardless of our political views, we need to get along”. But the mistake is that these are not political differences. They are differences of ethics and basic decency.
