@ossington@mastodon.xyz Spijkenisse is not a suburb of Rotterdam. It's a city on a whole other island. with a history of its own.
It used to have an eel fishing industry when it was still a marsh, but then transformed that into a thriving farming community after poldering started.
The local old church was used by the Spanish occupation as a watchtower.
Across the bridge over the Old Meuse river lies Hoogvliet, which -is- a part of Rotterdam. Spijkenisse is part of Nissewaard, however.
