Every form of entertainment besides movies have some type of intermission: theatrical plays, sports (hockey calls their between-period breaks such), speeches, TV shows (ads/pausing), video games (pausing). Why are movies now the sole exception, especially when they're running 3+ hours long?

Answering my own question: A) it might mean one less movie showing a day, which modern multiplex chains and media conglomerates apparently can't spare, and B) movie directors throwing a fit at the idea of their Cecil B. DeMille-esque epics being "tampered."
