During ww1, imperial Britain made three conflicting promises - giving Palestine to different groups: * to the Arabs for an Arab state in exchange for an Arab Revolt against the Ottomans; * to France - to partition the territory into British & French domains; and * to the Zionists for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”. https://www.juancole.com/2026/07/haunted-history-lawrences.html #Palestine #PalestineHistory #EUPol #USPol #UKPol #Balfour #imperialism #UKPol #Balfour #imperialism .

@DrALJONES@mastodon.social mentioned in the article, but not linked to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balfour_Declaration In the film about "Lawrence of Arabia" there's a famous wide-screen scene with people sitting down, drinking tea (or something) and discussing plans. I can't remember the scene exactly, but as it's played out on screen, the reactions of the characters are pivotal to the plot. It's all about betrayal. I think that the film might have portrayed the Arabs as being shifty, and if so, LoA is just more of the same sort of propaganda and lies that the British empire (as it was then... the film itself probably came after Suez, but imperial notions don't die overnight) was just so adept at. I must go back and rewatch it. With a more critical eye, of course...
