Microsoft has tried a few times to take a chokehold of the Windows application ecosystem: in 2004 with Windows Marketplace and later in 2012 with Windows Store. The playbook was the usual: erect a toll-booth and start taxing users and developers.

The introduction of UEFI Secure Boot and Windows marketplaces were Microsoft's contributions to the so-called "War on general-purpose computing". Fortunately for us Microsoft's all attempts to fully lock down the PC ecosystem have failed. 7/21 #microsoft
