Command & Conquer 3 is still by far my favourite RTS and also my recommendation for someone who never played an RTS game before. The controls are easy to learn and the game does not punish you too much for bad micro.
The three playable factions are similar enough that you can pick all of them up easily if you know how to play one of them, but they are still very different in play style.
Gameplay is very quick, like faster than StarCraft, but because it is much less complex it doesn't feel as daunting.

@emilyenco@todon.nl I also really liked Generals. It's a bit more difficult, but kinda funny and really dumb.

@emilyenco@todon.nl i love the c&c series. my favorite was command and conquer red alert 2: yuris revenge. though the yuri faction is a bit overpowered. its an amazing game and the balance between factions (despite their entirely different types of units and structures) is really cool.
