That is Google's fault. Google uses the anticompetitive Play Integrity API to deny non-certified OSes access to the NFC functionality of Google Wallet. Besides NFC, Google Wallet works and NFC itself also works, just not in Google Wallet. Google allows very insecure out of date OSes to use all Google Wallet functionality but doesn't certify or allow a proper secured OS like GrapheneOS.

@tranquil_cassowary@infosec.exchange no, it's grapheneOS's fault. they decided to base off of android and this limitation was already known. in fact, it's even more their fault because by basing off of android, they help keep the whole ecosystem a monoculture. i know the arguments for and against this decision already. it's still their fault. compatibility won out over user privacy and freedom. android is not an open operating system, even if lots of the source is published.
