@IngaLovinde@embracing.space @mcc@mastodon.social I believe the CDDB data was mostly track length and numbers, right? Like, that data would be somewhat unique per album. I think Gracenote ended up owning that data, but also supplemented it with data derived from the music itself to let tracks be identified through fragments played or recorded in various services. It all ended up under one roof.

    @DarcMoughty@infosec.exchange @mcc@mastodon.social yes, CDDB data was track listing + album cover + other album info identifiable by album checksum derived from track lengths and numbers. Useful to audio CD playback software, for displaying album art and track names (this was the only reason for CDDB to exist, because audio CDs, roughly speaking, do not have any metadata besides track lengths); but absolutely useless for identifying songs by fragments. Considering that society mostly moved away from audio CDs and that all the other digital music formats (including those stored on CDs) typically also store metadata, I don't think CDDB is very relevant now.
