This is me in front of #JodrellBank's #LovellTelescope back in 2018. As far as I'm concerned the best thing we have ever managed to do as a species is to cooperate to do remarkably clever things none of us could manage alone, in the service of understanding more about the universe we find ourselves in. The fact we seem to be turning away from that as a culture and deciding the highest, most noble goal we could be persuing as a species is money making is heartbreaking. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y6r9rdxygo #ResearchFunding #ScienceFunding #UKRI

@afewbugs@social.coop I’m not sure a large part of this isn’t UKRI punching science in the face while sucking up to govt AI bullshit.

  • @afewbugs@social.coop Went there many times as a kid πŸ’š My grandad was a FE teacher and built a sundial with his students in the grounds, it worked by standing on the stone that corresponds to the month of the year and using your body to make the shadow to read the time. The students had to work out the placement of the stones.

@afewbugs@social.coop "The fact we seem to be turning away from that as a culture and deciding the highest, most noble goal we could be persuing as a species is money making is heartbreaking." This. Few years back I felt like we want to KNOW the universe, but lately it moved in some strange way to "If I'm not correct I don't care what is the truth." I'm so sad that we stopped be curious just because of curiousity.😞
