I think mine (in the UK) were about six weeks. The really long ones were in between GCSE and A-Levels (end of the school year in which you are 16) and that ended up being really bad: that long break got everyone completely out of the habit of being in school and it took quite a long time to get back into the flow. It was somewhat similar in the long summer between finishing school and starting university, but university was a lot more self-directed and so preserving the habits of school would have been less useful.
