☄️ On April 13, 2029, asteroid Apophis will fly so close to Earth that about 7.6 billion people could see it with their naked eyes. Apophis is about 340 meters across, roughly the height of the Eiffel Tower. It will pass just 32,000 km from Earth's surface, closer than our geostationary satellites. The flyby was a hot topic at the Apophis T-3 Years conference in Padua, Italy this June. Naked-eye visibility should last about 7 hours as it streaks from Australia across to the North Atlantic. Peak brightness occurs over Cameroon at 4:35 PM EDT. Closest approach is at 5:46 PM EDT over the Atlantic. NASA says an asteroid this large passes this close only every few thousand years.
