This is interesting news. Swedish education officials are investing heavily again in traditional printed textbooks. The national strategy aims to phase out digital devices for children under the age of six entirely, following a drop in international reading assessment scores. Research indicates that the physical act of handwriting activates complex neural networks governing motor skills, vision, memory, and language-cognitive benefits that are largely lost on a keyboard. #Education #Reading

@paulschoe@mastodon.world having taken two kids through this ”digital native” era, which basically just amounted to giving them iPads and laptops and believing that would magically transform into relevant tech skills, I’m happy for future parents who don’t have to do pen and paper writing exercises at home with their kids after school. The Swedish school system has, for a long time, been a mess and needed a bit less blue-eyed , ”back to basics” strategy.

@paulschoe@mastodon.world When I am learning lines for a play, I find that writing them down on pen and paper helps me retain what I'm saying and doing. The act of writing and processing also gives my brain time to really chew on the words and their meaning.
