When I worked in the English department at college, I read one of the professor's fiction books, and wrote a little note about how much I enjoyed it and put it in her mailbox. She came to the office while I was working to thank me. Authors CRAVE feedback. Even just acknowledgment. I've taken to leaving comments on AO3 stories because I know each positive note makes a writer's day.
