@oemb1905@gnulinux.social Not quite ephemeral vs persistent. More like: Self-hosted (Navidrome, Nicotine+) - Legal liability if you share publicly. Fine for personal use or trusted circles, but posting links broadly. You're hosting copyrighted material without redistribution rights. Corporate platforms (YouTube, SoundCloud, Spotify) - Surveillance, data extraction, ethical problems. But everyone's there, so links actually work for discovery. Federated (Funkwhale, etc.) - Ethically sound, no hosting liability if linking externally, but tiny userbase. Sharing a Funkwhale link is like sharing a Mastodon post in 2016. So "shitty" is forced to choose between legal risk, supporting surveillance capitalism, or shouting into the void. None are actually good options. What I am going to try to do for now on is ListenBrainz scrobbles (metadata only, no hosting) and external links when I need to share something specific. It's the least shitty compromise. It supports artists via plays, no legal exposure, but still relies on corporate platforms for the actual audio.

@TerminalTilt@social.terminaltilt.com 🤝 Alright, thanks for explaining your perspective !! 🥷🏼 I think big music has trained many in society to wrongly think that public music sharing is illegal, but/and in my understanding of case/law, fair-use, and precedent over sharing ... it's not that black and white and, in my understanding, comes down to ephemeral vs. persistent. It also comes down to type of access (listening vs. downloading). But/and, I retain a lawyer to fight for these legal opinions in court and not everyone has that privilege. ✍️ Scope and profit are also legal variables, not just lay opinions, so how much one shares, how broadly they share it and or whether they are profiting over it, also matter legally, not just ethically. These are my opinions and not necessarily a response to your opinions. I know others that share your concern and also limit sharing to listenbrainz only for similar reasons as you espoused. Here's my listenbrainz: 🎵 https://listenbrainz.org/user/oemb1905/
