@lexiconista@mastodon.ie SHRDLU was another example of a text-driven interface. I've coded up versions of these things many years ago. I thought that I'd also seen the Eliza source code at some point, but it was probably someone else's implementation of the idea. It didn't have as much in the way of guided conversations, like you mention with US states, but the version I've seen did have some similar tricks, like having a variety of canned responses to trigger keywords so it wasn't as repetitive. To answer your question, yes, non-English languages are equally simple.
