Other Linux distributions: Hides your typing while entering passwords into `sudo`
LMDE: Shows "*'s as you type
Usability / security balance. I wasted a lot of time re-typing passwords because I couldn't see if a character was typed.

@jrovu It's safer to not reveal your password length to somebody looking over you shoulder. That's why it's by default disabled in the most of distributions. You can always enable it. https://askubuntu.com/questions/860766/how-can-i-make-stars-appear-when-i-type-sudo-password
