The centrist narrative is vacuum sealed: The voters’ one job is unify around centrists. Therefore if a non-centrist runs and loses, it’s voters’ fault. If a centrist runs and loses it’s also voters’ fault. If a non-centrist runs and wins, it’s an unreplicable fluke and also radical and alienating.

Is it also incumbent upon centrists to rally around a leftist candidate? No, because leftist candidates can’t win. You have to run a centrist legacy candidate against them as an independent. Then when that fails, you have to whine that the party got hijacked by the voters, who failed by…voting blue.
