Eighty years ago today, the US detonated a nuclear bomb on Bikini Atoll, the first of its kind since Nagasaki. The contamination caused by the bomb - one of two dropped as part of Operation Crossroads - was 1,000 times that in Chernobyl and is thought to have left the island uninhabitable for 24,000 years. At a party later the same year celebrating the mission and the disbanding of the team behind it, they made a cake immitating the blast. #USPolitics
