British politics has finally completed its evolution, we’ve reached the stage where a man dressed as a bin stands as the most honest candidate in an entire constituency. Maybe he is the hero we deserve. https://www.ft.com/content/e68db443-bbc6-40b2-8ac6-c73691d40607?syn-25a6b1a6=1#comments-anchor

  • If the Clacton by-election was a national interest Count Binface would win comfortably. And Sir John Curtice would be on the BBC, analysing the numbers with the grave concentration of a man watching the collapse of a civilisation. More British than that is frankly impossible.

Although Binface vs Farage is very funny, I think it is an also a sign that democracy is now truly broken in the UK and a dangerous distraction from the urgent issues facing us a nation. We and the media are the problem here. If we can’t take the issues facing the UK seriously, why should the politicians that represent us. Satire is very powerful but not if it becomes the main event. The correct response is not to contest the election at all (as the serious parties have concluded): Farage wins by default and is investigated as an MP without all this politics as spectacle.
