Paul fussel once famously remarked in his analysis of american class structure that poor people and the ultra rich were incredibly similar in that their personal preferences are nearly invincible to criticism. Wealthy people and poor people do not have the innate drive to signal success or prosperity to anyone. Their life is their own, to the extent they control anything outside their own interests. The lower middle and middle class however will be the first to tell you all about it. They advertise their college on bumper stickers and exclusively use iphones and branded lifestyle products. You can make them spend money based on this inherent insecurity (the lack of advertised success). They will gladly entertain a Porsche they cannot afford. The upper middle class he remarked is an asymptote. Theyre needlessly frugal to the point of frustrating local economies. Thry rarely own brands, and value consistency and quality over lifestyle branding. The upper middle class have cobbler and tailor shops in their phones, which are likely offbrand and old. They are also consistently less likely to be acutely aware of their class strata.
