Elon Musk’s definition of “open source” is interesting - but in line with what I’d expect from a man who knows nearly nothing about engineering. He announced that #Tesla would open source their Model S and Model X. I hope that the release will be better than the one Tesla made for the Roadster model. Because, after Musk said that Tesla would have released “_all design & engineering of the original Tesla Roadster - whatever we have, you now have”, they ended up publishing a repository only with: The .dbc database filesA diagnostic ISO No source code, no blueprints, no CAD files, no bill of materials, no firmware source, no schematics, no motor design, no pack design. Also, note that Tesla would be compelled to open source anyway parts of its software. It was already force to comply in 2018. Tesla cars run Linux, and the GPL license prevents Tesla from modifying the kernel without releasing the modifications. Tesla complied by open-sourcing its kernel fork, but even that repo hasn’t seen any activity in more than 2 years.
