The "proofs" often cited are actually hypotheses based on indirect evidence: Iridium Levels: Geologists found high levels of iridium (a metal common in meteorites) in sand samples near the Kaaba, which supports the meteorite theory proposed by Paul Partsch in 1857. Historical Accounts: Some records describe the stone floating in water (which would rule out dense rocks like basalt but fit with porous volcanic glass or pumice) and local legends of it "falling from the sky." Visual Inspection: In 1974, scientists Robert Dietz and John McHone, along with an anonymous Arab geologist, examined the stone and observed diffusion banding, leading them to conclude it is likely agate (a terrestrial rock), not a meteorite. Other analyses suggest it could be basalt or obsidian. Because the stone is sacred, fragmented, and sealed in a silver frame, no scientist has ever been permitted to take a sample or perform non-destructive testing (like X-ray fluorescence) to confirm its composition. Therefore, while the meteorite theory is popular and aligns with the tradition of it coming from "heaven," it remains a strong probability rather than a scientifically verified fact.
