If an author writes a maths textbook with exercises, .... is someone else (me) allowed to write a book of solutions and publish it? Or does that break copyright? Or is reproducing the exercises considered "fair use" ? #maths #writing #publishing #copyright

@rzeta0@mathstodon.xyz I am not a lawyer, but I don't think that would be a breach of copyright. It may be regarded as a "derivative work" but it's so different from the original that I don't really see how. Textbooks tend to stop containing the solutions after high school, which is the limit of SmartmanApps' knowledge.

@rzeta0@mathstodon.xyz In my opinion, the best thing would be to write a book to solve those exercises, because it would help those who have trouble solving them, and they would also know what the mistakes are and avoid them.

@rzeta0@mathstodon.xyz I don't know, but textbooks usually have the answers in the back, so I'd be surprised if you could find enough without answers to make a book out of it
