Also, one of the Fates in this production was played by Allie Daniel, a trans woman! She is big, curvy, and campy…I don’t know if I’ve ever felt so much like I saw a performer on stage whose shoes I could imagine being in. She was brilliant and her deeper resonance capacity does something otherworldly to the Fates’ songs.

Other things: -Andre de Shields is a god! Okay, I mean he is literally playing Hermes, and I knew him by voice and some clips of smaller performances, but I have never seen him fully play the role…and holy shit, he just has such presence! He walks out and has the audience by the hand and owns that stage. Everyone else is just acting in his play. -Patrick Page injured himself around the time it was recorded, so Hades has a stylish foot brace on and uses a cane. And you would think for a musical with such active choreography that it might be a problem, but no, this man just had to go and be so talented and skilled that he turned it into an asset! He adapts to it by using it to slink even more across the stage, embodying even more “snake” energy in his performance. Other times he leans into it to suggest that something is lost and injured in him, as with the character. It’s spellbinding! -I’ll admit it: Reeve Carney finally won me over. I did not like him as Orpheus. His voice is not quite the right fit for the register he wants to sing in, and often picks roles that I don’t think are right for him. At least, that’s what I thought purely on his vocal performance. Well, I get it now. While I still think he was just okay towards the beginning of the story, by the middle, he really is amazing with his stage performance. His acting and movement brings it together. I actually like him as Orpheus finally. -Amber Gray has a blast goofing off and turning her dance choreography into this exaggerated drunk version she developed the character into by the end of her run. It’s a joy to watch her get silly. -Eva Noblezada…she makes some very bold choices with Eurydice - and she had the skill to back up those choices. She made me cry with almost all her numbers. I really felt the music, she was brilliant. There’s moments where she chose to add a waver to her voice, to pause before a word, and more that were unique to her performance of the character, and it hits so damn hard
