I hesitate to mention that unwittingly, or perhaps somewhat wittingly in Jack Lewis's case, the #Inklings have played a decisive role in blurring the lines between historiography and fantasy-writing. I wish to be charitable towards #Tolkien (and even Lewis, though he smells quite rotten to me) but this is why I say that perhaps he should have examined his doubts about hurling so much of himself, the better part of his power in fact, into the legendarium...
...oh dear. Oh dear oh dear.

But I've strayed from the subject of Dick Nixon and his own part in American mythopoeia, most especially how he started bringing right-wing "evangelical" Christianity into the forefront of U.S. politics. This was part of his "Southern Strategy", an evil GOP scheme to detach the unhappy right-wing Democrats who were incensed that FDR made some attempt to extend social relief to non 'white' persons. The extremist Christians whose sort of Protestantism goes back to slaveowning days were happy to throw in with Richard Nixon. Anyone who knows about the Nixon "tapes" knows what a bigot he was.
