Ronald Reagan was a triumph of Republican #marketing. They lucked into Reagan, who knew he was a failure as a movie star and thus channelled all that spite and festering hatred for Hollywood stardom into political activity, where all spiteful and hateful people end up eventually.
It's natural: if you're a failure and can't think of anything to be good at, you enter politics so you can bash the world into a different shape, one that honors your illusions of success. The entire U.S. #conservative sphere is boiling over with resentful failures.

#Conservatism comes naturally to failures because it's always possible to cast failure as the result not of one's own failings but because of the world's corruption. At some point in the past, when tradition meant more and Men were Men and women were excluded from public life, the failure is certain they would have succeeded, but then the virus of rebellion took over and now it's the failure's job to freeze social change dead...or to roll it decades or even centuries backward. Right now, Peter tells me, there's complaints from right-wing figures up in arms because they're being accused of academic incompetence. (cont'd)
