@fiore@brain.worm.pink @rose@pl.pinkro.se @navi@social.vlhl.dev True but well design mistakes happen and shadow was pretty much just moving the password field (2nd field, typically set to either x or nothing these days) away from /etc/passwd, so a single root-only file is a pretty straightforward change. Weirder is more on BSDs that also got something similar to /etc/shadow but different filename + content.
