I still can't get over the fact that if you're looking at some models of DB passenger information displays (the ones with big monochrome LCD pixels), you're just looking at an X11 display running on SUSE it's a delight

    AEG went the way of designing all custom hardware - one controller board per row of LCD panels (2 in a typical display), where each controller is pretty much indepemndently rendering texts with integrated fonts, taking care of scrolling texts and all that. Just a small board with a microcontroller, hooked up via RS485 to a PC104 control computer. funkwerk said "it's a display innit" and built a custom LVDS-to-SPI board that controls the LCDs and is hooked up to the control computer. I love it
