last night a friend was telling me that ai doesnt have to necessarily kill the planet because we could make renewable-powered environmentally friendly data centers. and like. okay, sure, maybe. i think anything that requires terraforming the land to fill a building with rare-earth minerals is inherently not eco friendly. but like. we dont need data centers. we have entire ecosystems of decentralized, distributed, peer to peer technology. ecosystems built and maintained by like 3 people each. we should be working towards a coexistence with technology that doesnt require us to destroy the land to centralize compute and data.
