Idiots hiring:
Applicant: "What's the salary?"
Company: "Well that depends, we need to interview you first, but it's certainly competitive..."
Applicant: "... okay?"
Three or more rounds later...
Company: "We think you're a great fit, we'd like to offer you the position. At $X per year."
Applicant: "That's not competitive, I make 30% more now, and you said I'd have to relocate..."
Company: "Well, if it's just about the money for you..."
Smart people hiring:
Applicant: "What's the salary?"
Company: "It's $X per year."
Applicant: "Sorry, that won't cut it. But I'm real happy you told me ahead of time and saved us all a bunch of work."
Company: "So are we, now we can move on to someone who will take $X per year..."
This is not about me personally. But it's why if there's no salary on the table from the start, I am not interested in doing the interview.
