Two things can be true at the same time: 1) OpenAI’s cyberattack against HuggingFace was marketing, and 2) their LLM-based cyberattack capabilities are genuinely dangerous and capable of very sophisticated attacks. (When state actors do this kind of marketing, it’s called weapons testing.) I’m not saying they were planning for it to happen right then and to HuggingFace specifically, by the way! What matters is that they created a situation in which it could happen.

@texttheater@mastodon.social in principle, sure, but I do not believe that it was marketing and I do not see how it helps their marketing position. It shows that they are *not in control of their own models*, and that their models will do criminal things. They were forced into this disclosure by HuggingFace's earlier report.
