The rare flowers that grew in Kiyohara's gardens drew the attention of emperors Saga (嵯峨天皇 785-842), Junna (淳和天皇 786-840) and Ninmyō (仁明天皇 808-50), who became regular visitors.
Soon the entire neighbourhood became known as 'Hanazono' (花園 the 'Flower Garden').

Emperor Ninmyō was so taken by the gardens that he bestowed the courtly 5th rank on the nearby mountain (which he often climbed) to protect it, so the view would never be ruined. As a result the mountain became known as 'Goi-zan' (五位山 '5th Rank Mountain'). #Hanazono #五位山
