Does not feel like an optimal solution to me.
Fun project for sure.
I was in the market for a new e-reader a few weeks ago and wasted a lot of time thinking about what I want and reading into what’s available, but turned again to Kobo for the simple reason that it’s quite “hackable” and does not require registration - or rather can be bypassed quite easy.
My old KOBO GLO always did it’s job for many many years until I finally smashed it by dropping a heavy moving box on it… sad.
But; the newer Kobos can be - just like the old ones - used without ever registering.
Lightweight
affordable
can be sideloaded with KOreader if wanted (it’s not complicated)
great backlight
great screen
battery life is crazy good
reads (even without KOreader) almost all formats out of the box
newer models have color option, which I find great for comics
"hackable" with a bigger SD card (newer models have them glued in, but can still be accomplished)
to “bypass” registration, connect via USB, find the “Kobo eReader.conf” or “ereader.conf”, open in any text-editor and look for:
[ApplicationPreferences]
add this:
SideloadedMode=true
eject, unplug, reboot Kobo and you’re done. never requires registration. load it with ebooks from where-ever and be happy.
