@DerGiga@troet.cafe @ichbindabomb@nerdculture.de A few times with family, I have been the only one able to understand a non-native accent. Afterwards I get asked if the person was speaking English, which is always strange to me, because 1) I responded in English without either of us ever needing to repeat or rephrase anything and 2) their (native anglophone) regional accents are often heavier. If my brother's accent were much heavier, I'd find him harder to understand than some non-native speakers he thought were not even speaking English. The one and only time the other person wasn't speaking English, family didn't ask, because my embarrassed response in very broken Spanish and the repetition/rephrasing by us both made it obvious.
