But, for #America and the world, the episode also holds three important lessons about Donald Trump’s #tariffs. And the president’s latest threat, issued on Monday, to hit #Canada with tariffs of 50 per cent on a wide range of #goods raises the stakes and shows how important it is for Canada to hold the line. The first lesson is that retaliation works. Where #China, for instance, has spent years carefully building geopolitical leverage through control of critical supply chains, Canada’s booze #boycott has been powered mostly by consumer choice and the decision of the provincially owned liquor companies of #Ontario and #Quebec not to buy US alcohol. And it turns out that rum and rosé can pack almost as much of a trade war punch as rare earths.
