the most counterproductive sort of satire is the kind that exaggerates the real evil in the fiction and trusts the reader to understand - or rather themselves reconstruct - the reductio ad absurdum a better sort of satire creates a microcosm of a weaker but more obvious form of the real evil, and through the story demonstrates unequivocally (if still by showing more than telling) that even this lesser evil is not to be tolerated
