This is a great example of why the web rocks. Safari and Chrome disagreed on the spec, so we ended up with a third, better spec. This wouldn't happen if one company controlled everything: https://webkit.org/blog/16587/item-flow-part-1-a-new-unified-concept-for-layout/

@nolan@toot.cafe It wasn't just disagreement, it was disagreement with ongoing investment. The fact of both teams being willing to actually *do* something here is what allows progress to arrive. This is also the key thing that Apple withheld for more than a decade (and still does in many areas).

@nolan@toot.cafe Agreed, but it also shows the risk here, only two parties meaningfully can participate currently. Apple has half of mobile, Google has the other half and all of desktop. The Chrome spinoff thing from the DOJ will likely spawn dozens of new browser participants in its wake.
