When I see products advertised as either recyclable plastic or recycled plastic I can’t help but think that they are really only suggesting that this plastic gets used twice rather than only once.

@jensorensen@mastodon.social And the chasing arrows don't even mean it's recyclable. We'll see how California's new law trying to tame the mess works out this fall.

@jensorensen@mastodon.social And the eventual realisation that some businesses have separate waste bins that all get emptied into the same collection - because for a business, recycling is less important than being seen to recycle. (My own workplace has this, not out of any deceptive plan, but because so many people were throwing food in the paper bins that the recycling firm rejected us as irredeemably contaminated.)

@jensorensen@mastodon.social I'm very pessimistic about plastic recycling, a given city can typically only recycle one or two of the plastic types on a good day, I assume most cities are burying or shipping most plastic away. My personal outlook is, "Sort the plastic so that all the plastic can be buried together, then in 50 years time there is a chance that it can be dug up and properly recycled when it is worth it". Worst case we have regular landfill and a slightly more expensive to create plastic landfill.

@jensorensen@mastodon.social Very pertinent. What amused me recently was the oversized plastic bag of an organic chicken from the estate of King Charles III, that Champion of the Environment, which had precisely no recycling information on it at all. One might argue that it’s honest given that plastic recycling is so rare.

  • @jensorensen@mastodon.social better off to pass actual restrictions that help the climate like mandating banks and other businesses restrict fossil fuel usage. And if they complain, tell them to take it up the ass. And then, fine them if they do anything to fight it. Billionaires and big corporations are whiny little bitch children who need to be told to suck it a million times a year and be told they are nothing important the same amount of times per year.

@jensorensen@mastodon.social For a long time, I've wanted to try doing this... https://www.preciousplastic.com/ ... but I don't know how to make it pay for itself without setting prices prohibitively high.
