I can normally do a complete pkg upgrade on FreeBSD before the equivalent apt update step has finished running on Ubuntu (I haven't run Debian for many years). The slow update speed is one of the things that always annoys me when I go from FreeBSD to a Linux distro. freebsd-update, on the other hand, is painfully slow. Upgrading tens of MiBs of base system with it takes longer than upgrading tens of GiBs of packages with pkg. Once pkgbase is a bit more stable, I'm looking forward to using it for everything and not just test machines.
