You might even do something like "OK, look at what we did for the frobulazor: we need something like that for the grokulator, only without the zanification part, and in N dimensions. Spec it for me" (sometime later) "OK, now with these corrections, build it".
I've never tried it, but if I'm not mistaken, then that's the current state of the art -- with more or less iterations needed due to "errm, I get this compiler error" or "works now, but you missed the Nth dimension".

@HalvarFlake@mastodon.social (3/4) But that's still just a bigger tool to lay bigger bricks quicker, it's not a revolution of architecture. If we were to get that revolution, "in a way that steam and combustion engines allowed", then that would mean AI that either has developed a true understanding of language (not holding my breath there), or that's at least trustworthy and error-free enough that you can really just say "build me a system to these specs, and check that it compiles and passes these tests".
