Tracked down a citation for my article on the CGA composite video. There are two main versions of the CGA's composite output circuitry, splitting CGA cards into "old style" and "new style" designs. The new-style designs feed color inputs into components of the luma signal. This better helps differentiate colors on a black and white composite monitor.

But why did IBM care about black and white composite monitors all of a sudden? Because of the IBM Model 5155, the PC Portable. Inside this computer was a full-length, desktop-compatible CGA card, which attached to the internal amber composite monitor with a header that you can find on your regular CGA card too.
